Academies

Anne Arundel County girls ages 11-14 are invited to participate in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy. Named after Dr. Betty Shabazz, an Honorary Member of Delta Sigma Theta and widow of civil rights leader Malcolm X, the Delta Academy was created as a way to offer opportunities for personal, academic, and social development to preteen and early teenage girls.

NACAC has touched the lives of more than 300 girls under this initiative since its inception. Activities have included, but are not limited to, Science in Everyday Experiences (SEE) activities, mathematics tutorials, public speaking, book club, saving money, and college campus tours. Past community service projects include Sarah's House, a supportive housing program for homeless families and the Harmony House, a meeting ground for foster children and their biological families. Additionally, participants have assisted chapter members with the annual Valentine's Day party at Pinewood East, an assisted living facility.

Delta GEMS stands for Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully and was a brand new initiative implemented last year from Delta Sigma Theta National Headquarters. A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful "Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy: "Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow", Delta GEMS was created to "catch the dreams" of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18 and/or grades 9 - 12. Delta GEMS is designed to serve as an outgrowth and continuation of the Delta Academy Program. Delta GEMS provides the frame work to actualize those dreams through performance of specific tasks that develop a "CAN DO" attitude.

The goals for Delta GEMS are:

  • Instill the need to excel academically;

  • Provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;

  • Assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures-high school and beyond;

  • Create compassionate, caring and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.

We are proud to announce that North Arundel County Alumnae Chapter (NACAC) was recognized for its GEMS program at the Eastern Regional Conference in 2018.
